MY PERSONAL KEYS TO BETTER DREAM RECALL

(Taken from the book, "He Who Walks on Two Worlds" by Dr. Saul Shaye)

There is one question I have been asked repeatedly through the years, and that is: "How do you remember so many dreams in vivid detail as often as you do?" After pondering the question, I came up with the following list of my own personal necessary perimeters that I have come to associate with good dream recall. Although it is true that I have had some first-rate dreams in unfavorable situations, my best dream recall occurs when the following conditions exist. You may or may not require all of these, but for one to have exceptional remembrance of dreams, it is important to pay attention to the circumstances that are favorable to one's own dream recall.

1. ATMOSPHERE
My ideal atmosphere is a room that enables me to go into a deep, hibernation-type sleep in a very short period of time. It must be cool to cold, which for me is 66 to 68 degrees (F). All light from windows must be blocked out (even around doors) if the nap is during the day. A small night-light, twenty or more feet away from me, is the most light I can tolerate without disturbance. In other words, I prefer a cold, darkened room.

2. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ideally, I shouldn't be exhausted. When I'm very tired, I go into a deep sleep and don't wake up until I'm rested, which may be morning. I need at least 7 hours sleep per night, with at least a one-hour nap during the day for optimal relaxation. Food is also important. It is best not to eat heavily right before bedtime. If you're hungry, fruit seems to be the easiest on digestion, which enables one to sleep for optimal dream recall. A heavy meal at bedtime is the same as being exhausted.
